Manchester School of Arts

Sketchbook Prize 2017

Benzie building, Manchester School of Arts.

10 - 21 June 2017

The process; one vital part of creation that is often never seen: Hidden in the form of a closed book; playing is the basis of all creativity. One line, one picture or one stroke is the beginning to something bigger. Evoking more thoughts, possibilities and ideas, the path leads towards the final execution. The final work is shown; the process is often kept secret guarded closely by the artist.

We believe that the process behind an idea is where the real creativity happens and we feel that it is a shame that, while there is a broad collection of work currently on display, the process behind their creativity is closed off. We invite the viewer to look into these processes and see the unseen reasoning, the unheard thoughts and the unspoken monologues of creativity.

The mental brakes, the breakthroughs, the leads and the one-way streets, everything that didn’t happen and anything that made it happen. Let us open up the private journey our mind takes and celebrate the path to artistic identity.
